Pretty Petty’s Poem for the Disabled

Hello Pretty Pets, how are you doing?

If you want to know more about handicapped, Amanda wrote a very powerful paper about “Being Handicapped”. Just click on this link: http://beinghandicappedessay.blogspot.com. In 2001, Amanda discovered poetry by an accident.

Just Like You
By-Amanda D. Petty

It’s hard for me to talk.
I can’t walk.
My body isn’t that strong.

I get hurt when you tease me,
And I know you don’t mean to.
But, you do.

I know I’m used to it;
But, it still hurts.

You don’t know what it’s like to be in a power-chair. You may feel sorry for me and act on it. But, please don’t. Yes, I’ve got a story to tell. When I tell it, are you gonna feel sorry for me? I hope not because I’m just like you, with some wheels.

I write poetry,
Have a web site,
And draw.

People are amazed that I can do these things
And I don’t understand why.

Is it that I’m a handicapped person
Or, that you’re surprised at me?

People, why are you amazed about what I can do? Yes, I am disabled and all but, I’m just like you. I love to meet new people, and I love doing different things. Everything that you do; I do it too but with more difficulty.

I sing,
Play the keyboard,
And dance.

Guys just see my ride.
Ladies look at me with a weird eye.

Stop looking!
I’m just like you.

You think I’m different; and you aren’t? You tease me, and call me hurtful names. Nope, you don’t care. Why? Maybe you don’t know me. Well, I know you. You aren’t that different from me. We both have feelings, hearts, a body, and friends. We both cry, have souls, and we have each other.

I’m just like you,
But, with four wheels
And I sit.

You don’t know me,
And you make fun of me?

I’ve got fears too.
I get scared also
Because, I’m just like you.
